Medical Practitioner Visa (Subclass 422)

 Important: This visa subclass is no longer available as from 1 July 2010.


Visa Entitlements

This visa entitles holders to:

  • work in Australia for a time frame of between 3 months and 4 years
  • bring with them to Australia any eligible secondary applicants. Secondary applicants are able to work and study in Australia
  • enjoy unlimited travel in and out of Australia for the period of their temporary employment

Sponsor Eligibility

To be approved as a temporary resident sponsor you need to:

  • demonstrate you are  an established and actively operating lawful business in Australia
  • be willing and able to comply with the responsibilities associated with being a sponsor
  • demonstrate a satisfactory history of compliance with Australian immigration lawsI

Who can be a sponsor?

To sponsor overseas doctors you must belong to one of the following organisations:

  • a direct employer from the health industry
  • a State or Territory health authority
  • deputising service or locum agency
  • a community body such a local council, medical centre or government health organisation in regional areas


Doctor Eligibility

This visa applies to:

  • doctors trained overseas
  • students overseas who have obtained a medical degree in Australia

This visa is issued on the basis that you have been approved for registration to practice as a medical practitioner in the State or Territory in which you will be employed, evidence of such will need to be demonstrated.

You will need to have been offered full time employment with an approved sponsor, which can include hospitals, medical practices, area health services or other similar bodies.

Sponsorship requirements

To be issued this visa you will need to be sponsored and employed by an eligible and approved sponsor.

Health & Character

If you are neither an Australian citizen nor an Australian permanent resident, but you intend to live in or visit Australia, both you and all secondary applicants listed in your application will be required to undergo a health examination and pass specific health requirements before a visa can be issued.

You and all secondary applicants are also required to be ‘of good character’ in order to live in or visit Australia. This is determined by Australian authorities and you may be asked to provide evidence such as police certificates for every country you have resided in since turning 16 years of age for 12 months or longer over the previous ten (10) years.

Limitation on applications

If you are currently residing in Australia on another visa, your operational visa might carry restrictions preventing you from applying for another visa.


Family Member Eligibility

Some family members may qualify to accompany you to and stay with you in Australia. To qualify, family members must intend to remain members of your family unit. These include:

  • your partner
  • your dependent children
  • your dependent relatives who live with you

Sponsorship requirements

Every family member intending to come with you to Australia or later join you in Australia needs to be included in the sponsorship application.

Any family members applying after the original sponsorship application has been decided upon, will need to apply through a new sponsorship application by your sponsor which will include the sponsorship application fee.

Your sponsor will also need to accept responsibility for and compensate the Australian Government for any costs incurred by family members of yours accompanying you to Australia which may arise from their stay in Australia or their compliance with visa legislation and condition.
