The ACS is bound by the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) code, and in addition has established criteria for the level of qualifications, training and work experience an overseas IT professional must possess in order to qualify for migration to Australia based on their occupation.
The Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) was officially adopted in place of the Australian Standard Classification of Occupations (ASCO), along with an updated Skilled Occupation List (SOL) in ANZSCO on 1st July 2010.
This change has meant that many Australian visa applicants who originally lodged a General Skilled Migration (GSM) visa application based on a skills assessment by ACS in the ASCO occupation of Computing Professionals prior to 1st July 2010, have subsequently sought a further skills assessment from ACS to determine their skilled occupation classification under the new ANZSCO code.
This review is offered by ACS in light of the change, to determine if the documents and materials submitted for the original skills assessment are still eligible to receive a skills assessment for an occupation classified under the ANZSCO.
If a submitted General Skilled Migration (GSM) application is assessed as suitable against an ANZSCO occupation on the basis of the documents and materials provided for the original skills assessment, then the application will be prioritised by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, based on that ANZSCO occupation.
ACS advises that General Skilled Migration (GSM) applications lodged before 1st July 2010 which are assessed as suitable against the ANZSCO code will be processed in the same order as other applications based on that ANZSCO occupation.
In cases where ACS assess an applicant as suitable against an ANZSCO code on the basis of qualifications and/or experience obtained after the date of the original skills assessment, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship will consider it as a new skills assessment.
It is not possible to change a nominated occupation on a GSM visa application after lodgment, therefore any new or updated skills assessment obtained after lodgment cannot alter the priority of an existing application. If GSM visa applicants wish to move to a higher priority processing category based on a new skills assessment, they must lodge a new application.
Applicants who wish to amend or verify the status of their current skills assessment application, can contact ACS via email:
