NSW Releases State Migration Plan

Last Updated on Wednesday, 23 March 2011

The New South Wales Government has officially released details of their approved State Migration Plan (SMP). The NSW State Migration Plan will inform all decisions concerning immigration and visa grants for the state from 3 March 2011.

The New State Migration Plan has set a cap on the number of skilled migrants which can be sponsored by New South Wales Industry and Investment businesses each year. This cap is determined by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) and is agreed to by the NSW Government.

The New South Wales State Migration Plan includes a total of 138 occupations, all of which require skills considered to be in demand but in short supply in the State.

Of the 138 Skilled Occupations listed on NSW’s State Migration Plan, only a small number are available for sponsorship State wide under the Skilled Sponsored 176 / 886 permanent visa pathways, with the remaining skilled occupations available for State Sponsorship under the temporary skilled visa regional pathways.

The NSW State Migration Plan currently includes the following occupations for permanent skilled visa sponsorship under the Skilled Sponsored 176/886 Visas across the State of NSW:

  • Accountant (General) 221111
  • Management Accountant 221112
  • Taxation Accountant 221113
  • Actuary 224111

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist 234611
  • Chemist 234211
  • Biomedical Engineer 233913
  • Ships Engineer 231212

For the Temporary Skilled Regional Sponsored (visa subclass 475 and visa subclass 487) Visas, there are a much broader range of occupations available for State sponsorship to encourage applicants to live and work in the regions of NSW.

The NSW State Migration Plan also identifies a further 10 occupations which are considered an official part of NSW’s State Migration Plan for the skilled regional subclass 475/487 visas but are temporarily closed to new sponsorships because there are already sufficient applications pending which the Department of Immigration & Citizenship will process over the next few months. These include;

  • Financial Investment Adviser
  • Life Scientist
  • Biochemist
  • Pastrycook
  • Production Manager (Manufacturing)
  • Vocational Education Teacher
  • Corporate General Manager
  • Medical Administrator
  • Pharmacist Hospital

The occupations available for State Sponsorship under the NSW State Migration Plan are subject to change during the year, and are likely to be altered as application rates and available labor sources in the state are determined.

NSW has also indicated that they will adopt an updated State Migration Plan to come into effect from 1st July 2011.
